Efamro, the European Federation of Associations of Market Research Organisations has led the research sector’s response to the European Commission’s consultation on the protection of personal data. The efamro response was prepared together with ESOMAR, the World Association of Research Professionals, ensuring that research organisations represented by efamro and research practitioners represented by ESOMAR spoke with one voice on data protection.
The submission, on behalf of the European research sector, follows a three-month consultation with stakeholders across market, social and opinion research, including 31 associations in 25 countries.
The European Commission’s consultation on the legal framework for the fundamental right to protect personal data was published in July 2009, seeking views on the new challenges to protecting individuals’ data.
The response on behalf of the European research sector highlights the major issues relating to data protection and how they impact on research, including cloud computing, online data collection and the need for privacy by design in the development of new technologies.
Stig Holmer, President of efamro, comments: “For research, data protection legislation is vital to what we do. It is the responsibility of all research organisations to ensure that they understand the legislation and implement it correctly on a corporate level. As efamro represents the supply side of the European research industry .it is vital that we make a strong representation on this issue to protect all those engaged in the sector. Our priority, along with ESOMAR, is to ensure that current research exemptions are maintained and that, if the Commission decides to amend the legislation, research concerns are given proper consideration. As a sector we recognise the vital importance of protecting respondents and their data. Research has long had robust self-regulated Codes which enshrined these principles long before the legislation was introduced.”
The response coincides with the relaunch of efamro’s brand identity, spearheaded by the introduction of a new website and fresh branding this month. Copies of the efamro/ESOMAR response can be downloaded from the public affairs section of the new efamro website at http://www.efamro.eu
